Self-build affordable CROPCOVER
The Redpath Self-Build Crop Cover uses a “screw anchor” pole design that requires no concrete. This crop-cover is a cost-effective commercial tunnel with open side and end walls for ventilation and it is used for medium to large scale covered cropping for weather protection and temperature lift.
Developed by Redpath alongside its proven range of fully environmental controlled commercial greenhouse designs the self-build Crop Cover brings a new level of affordable overhead crop protection to our customers who require basic weather protection.
The Redpath self-build crop cover is used for the seasonal shelter of traditional outdoor crops including orchard crops, blueberry crops, strawberry crops, fruiting trees, nursery plants, vegetables and flower crops for general protection from cooler conditions, rain and hail etc.
Redpath use high tensile 80mm x 40mm oval tube for the main roof arches which offer superior strength compared to traditional round pipe smaller diameter roof arches. The arches are also pre-curved at our factory prior to delivery to your site to reduce the labour and handling for the owner and builder on site during construction. The arch connection bolt holes are also pre-drilled for your convenience.
The arch span is 8.5 metres wide although the span is tolerant to be built between 8.3m and 8.7m widths. Span can be connected side-by-side via the connecting “Y” post design to form a multi span building. The length of the Crop Cover is unlimited and may be from as little as 24m or up to hundreds of metres in length in 4m increments. The design is also tolerant to being built on undulating ground. For New Zealand and the Pacific islands Redpath self-build crop covers are supplied in three specifications to align with the wind exposure of your site. You can choose from (1) “Well Sheltered Site, (2) Semi-Sheltered Site and the most heavily braced option (3) only a “Lightly Sheltered” site.
Galvanised steel gutters in the valley area between the arches are an optional extra for management of the majority of rain water. If gutters are included the roof covers are attach to the gutter intermittently along the structures length to bolster the holding of the roof cladding in NZs windy conditions.
Two choices of greenhouse film covering are available.
A heavier than industry standard 202 micron singleskin SunSaver greenhouse film cladding is the most popular and is for this Self-build design. SunSaver is a multi-layer co-extruded film with 90% + light transmission. The SunSaver membrane gives superior strength and durability for New Zealand’s and Australasia’s testing environment.
There is also an option to choose a diffused open-UV opalescent luminous 150 micron greenhouse film for shadow depletion, this is a lower cost more basic polyethylene and is offered on an indent basis.
This design may also be clad in Shadecloth of various grades to suit the clients needs.
If the gutter option is not selected there are ventilation outlets created along the valley sections of the building. If the steel gutter is included then the gable ends and side walls of the rain-cover are open to allow warm air within the shelter to escape. It is popular to limit the building to a 50m length for improved ventilation if summertime production is being considered
